Johnson's The Self Publication is a collection of photography and personal essays designed to uplift people of color and specifically combat the harsh stereotypes associated with the Black Community. Johnson argues that according to several studies, some stereotypes have been activated so frequently (for example, through media exposure) that associated responses can begin to occur unconsciously and that regardless of whether individuals choose to accept a stereotype, if they simply do not consciously recognize and analyze the representations being offered, then such images can influence the ways that viewers perceive and interact with the groups being stereotyped—for instance, African-American women.

Johnson's talk will open space to make conscious the unconscious and empower attendees to engage and challenge such stereotypes and the role of media representations. Her work is powerful, engaging, and important. Join us.
